The Jane Austen Literacy Foundation was founded in 2014 by Jane Austen's family and continues to work in close collaboration with them today. Our North American Friends, launched in 2025, carries that same work forward—continuing Jane's literacy legacy for today’s readers and for generations to come.

Our mission is simple and enduring: to preserve and advance reading and writing as an essential human skill — ensuring that however technology and the world change, the ability to read and write with depth, confidence and independence is never lost.

As a young organization based in the U.S., we're looking for a volunteer with not-for-profit financial and compliance experience to manage our accounting and reporting.

This could be a board-level Treasurer role, or a supporting Bookkeeper role — the right level of responsibility depends on your professional background and experience. What matters most is understanding how a 501(c)(3) organization’s finances need to be managed and reported, and bringing that discipline to a growing organization doing meaningful work.

What you'd do:

• Develop our basic financial systems and processes

• Prepare simple monthly financial reports

• Prepare and file annual tax filings and reporting

• Help keep our financial practices clean and transparent as we grow

What we're looking for:

• Experience with U.S. not-for-profit accounting and bookkeeping

• Comfort with routine reporting and filing obligations

• Willingness to manage fundraising/charitable solicitation registration and reporting.

• Willingness and enthusiasm for helping a young organization build good financial habits from the outset

Good to know:

• Our programmatic and financial structure is straightforward — this is a manageable commitment rather than a complex finance role

• This is a volunteer position—requiring approximately 2 - 3 hours a month, and quarterly board meetings if appointed to the Board

• The NAF was launched in 2025—so you'd be joining at a true start-up stage, helping to shape how things are done and helping to scale the business
